We started Welch's Cowboy Kennels in 2003, but our
work with shorthairs started way before then.
Albert Welch has been dealing with German
Shorthaired Pointers for nearly twenty years.
Previously a wild bird hunter, his first shorthair was
given as a Christmas present, and from there on
shorthairs were it for him. Charlie Girl was a great
dog, with a good nose and a proud air about her.
Cowboy was the next shorthair in the house. Albert
got him in 1994, and Cowboy quickly became the
companion dog. It was with Cowboy that Albert
began hunting competitions with the NSTRA.
Cowboy was the largest shorthair we ever owned. He
had an excellent nose on him and was stylish to boot.
He championed out in 2001. It was also with
Cowboy that we began breeding shorthairs. Our first
litter of pups was born July 4th, 2001. Our dog from
that litter, Cowboy's Star-Spangled Banner, now lives
in Oklahoma.
We currently have Sweet Pea, whelped in 1999, who
is a two-time NSTRA champ. Sweet Pea has a very
competitive edge and a great nose for quail. She
dropped her first litter of pups in September of 2003.
In 2000, we got Millie, a solid liver shorthair. She
was out of the same female we had our first litter of
pups out of. Since we lost Charlie Girl, Millie has
been our next queen bee. She is a very proud girl.
Welch's Betsy Ross von Hesser (Betsy) joined us in
late 2001 from a kennel in Nebraska that specialized
in first generation american german shorthairs. She
has a very sweet disposition and is one of our best
mamas in the group.
In 2003 we were introduced to something new in the
shorthair world. Tim Myers, a friend of ours had a
solid black shorthair, a rarity for the breed. Tim
guides hunts for the Flying P Outdoors in Hico, and
trains birddogs, but he also breeds shorthairs. (Skoal
Run Kennels) We were impressed by the sleek look
of his black shorthair, Dillin, and on New Year's Day
of 2004 we welcomed a litter out of Dillin and our
Betsy. We had traditionally colored shorthairs as
well as black and white shorthairs and a solid black
shorthair pup. It was soon after, that that solid male
pup, Tux, joined our crew.
Today, we have successfully raised eight litters of
shorthairs. We still compete in the NSTRA with
Sweet Pea, our little champ, and Tux, who is still
learning the game. In the fall we hope to start trialing
BB, a very spunky pup out of Sweet Pea and Banner.
